WEST END, N.C. (AP) - Authorities say a hit-and-run driver fatally struck a 23-year-old Moore County man who was walking to work.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol said Steven McGregor of West End was killed in front of an elementary school as he walked to a nearby McDonald’s for his 5 a.m. shift Friday.

Trooper Sean Clearly says McGregor’s body was thrown into the schoolyard.

A bus driver, who’s also a cousin of McGregor’s, saw the body and called 911 about 6 a.m. Cleary says the bus driver didn’t realize it was her cousin until she walked with first responders to the body.

By Saturday afternoon, the Highway Patrol had located the truck suspected of hitting McGregor, as well as its owner.

No charges have been filed yet. The truck owner’s identity was not released.
