BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office has fired a prison deputy accused of misusing pepper spray near a group of people who were leaving a “Battle of the Bands” competition on Southern University’s campus last month.

Sheriff’s office spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks told The Advocate (https://bit.ly/1VewnJa ) that the deputy was fired Friday, but she wouldn’t release his name because he hasn’t been charged with a crime.

Hicks said the deputy was performing “extra-duty work” when he used pepper spray on the ground near band members, staff members, other law-enforcement officers and others who were leaving the April 2 competition on the Baton Rouge campus.

Hicks said the deputy was fired for policy violations, including false statements and inappropriate use of force.
