YOUNGSVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Franklin County authorities accuse a 24-year-old man of shooting his ex-girlfriend and kidnapping their 1-year-old daughter.

The North Carolina Department of Public Safety canceled an Amber Alert for Desaree Hopkins on Saturday after authorities found the child safe.

Youngsville police accuse Devon Whaley of Louisburg of shooting Desaree’s mother about 7:30 p.m. Friday and leaving with the girl.

Police say the mother attempted to escape in a vehicle but crashed less than a mile away from her apartment.

WTVD reports she had a domestic violence protective order against Whaley and that she’s in critical condition at a WakeMed hospital.

Police say an anonymous tip led officers to the child and Whaley. He faces multiple charges including attempted murder.
