SEATTLE (AP) - Federal officials say a Ferndale man was arrested as he approached the U.S.-Canadian border on his way to what he thought was a meeting with a 12-year-old girl.

U.S Attorney Annette Hayes says Christopher David Johnston was arrested Friday as he attempted to illegally enter Canada. He was charged with attempting to entice a minor.

Officials say Johnston began communicating in early May with a person who responded to an ad he placed on Craigslist. It said he was seeking a “young lady to spoil.”

An undercover agent responded, indicating she was not yet 13 years old. Officials say despite the age, Johnston continued to engage in increasingly sexualized emails, texts and chats with the agent.

He set up a meeting in Abbotsford, British Columbia and was arrested as he approached the border near Sumas, Washington.
