FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) - A New Bedford man has been sentenced to prison for assaulting his pregnant girlfriend on a busy highway.

Luis Cirino was sentenced to four to five years behind bars followed by two years of probation.

The 29-year-old Cirino was convicted by a Fall River Superior Court jury of strangulation, intimidation and aggravated assault and battery.

Police were called to Route 24 on December 4, 2014, for a report of two people fighting inside a car on the side of the road. The victim told responding officers that Cirino had tried to push her out of the car. When Cirino pulled over, she tried to flee, but he grabbed her, threw her to the ground and pulled out her hair.

Police said her neck had red marks consistent with strangulation.
