BATAVIA, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities believe two young children who died in a fire in western New York had been left home alone.

The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office says 2-year-old twin brothers Michael and Micah Gard died in the Friday night blaze.

Authorities say they were called to the home in Batavia just before 10 p.m. Friday and found the boys in a back bedroom in a first-floor apartment.

They say it appears the two young boys died of smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Sheriff’s investigators say their probe is still ongoing.
