JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Police say a security guard shot and killed an armed man outside a Jackson nightclub.

Multiple news outlets report that no charges have been filed against the security guard over the deadly shooting early Saturday outside Freelon’s Club.

Jackson Police Commander Tyree Jones said in a statement that 27-year-old Jessie James Newson was armed with a handgun when he exited a vehicle near the club’s entrance around 3 a.m. and was fatally shot by the guard.

Police said Newson had been involved in an altercation inside the club before the shooting. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Nobody else was injured in the shooting.

The guard’s name wasn’t immediately released.

Jones said the case will be presented to the Hinds County district attorney’s office.
