CRANFORD, N.J. (AP) - State police say a woman driving on the Garden State Parkway in central New Jersey was killed when her car left the highway for an unknown reason.

The accident occurred around 5:10 a.m. Sunday in Cranford.

Officials say 25-year-old Alex Simpkins was alone in her vehicle and traveling northbound when her car left the roadway, went down an embankment and struck a tree. The Bloomfield resident suffered “serious bodily injury” in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

Authorities say it didn’t appear that any other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
