NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) - Prosecutors say a New Jersey couple has been charged with unlawful disposal of a newborn after the boy went missing.

Middlesex County prosecutors and New Brunswick police say Jaciel Torres-Lopez and Mercedes Sanchez-Torres were charged last week.

Torres-Lopez has been jailed since his arrest last week. Sanchez-Torres was charged last week at an area hospital, where she was taken after giving birth.

Police authorized an excavation of a sewer line at the couple’s home and searched an East Brunswick landfill. The baby’s whereabouts remain unknown. A search and investigation are ongoing.

Bail is set at $100,000 each for the New Brunswick couple. It is not known if they have attorneys who can comment on the charges.
