SCRIBA, N.Y. (AP) - Novelis, Inc. says it expects to create 250 jobs over the next four years at its newly expanded aluminum plant on Lake Ontario.

Plant manager Kevin Shutt says the expansion is due to rising demand for aluminum in the auto industry. The popularity of the lightweight metal continues to grow as automakers try to meet the government’s stricter fuel efficiency standards.

Novelis has invested heavily in the plant outside Oswego, spending $500 million over the past five years to expand production of aluminum sheet. The company’s third finishing line began making aluminum sheet in December for Ford’s new F-Series Super Duty line of trucks.

The plant in Scriba employs 1,100, an increase of 460 from five years ago. It produces about one billion pounds of aluminum sheet annually.
