MORA, N.M. (AP) - Former state District Judge Matias A. Zamora will finally get to participate in his high school graduation ceremony, something he was unable to do 70 years ago when he was drafted into the U.S. Army.

Zamora will don a cap and gown during Friday’s ceremony in the northern New Mexico community of Mora. He’ll be celebrating with 30 graduating seniors.

New Mexico Veterans’ Services Secretary Jack Fox will be among the speakers who will honor Zamora.

Zamora was on track to graduate from Mora High School when he was drafted in 1945 at the end of his junior year. He served as a military police officer in Germany.

He earned his diploma upon returning home but never took part in a graduation ceremony. He went on to earn degrees from New Mexico Highlands University and Georgetown University.
