SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Fire officials in South Bend say a 10-year-old girl has died and four other people have been injured in a house fire on the city’s northwest side.

They say five people were inside the home when the fire began around 1:30 a.m. Thursday, and a man, a woman and two other children were able to escape. Firefighters needed to locate the girl in a front bedroom. She was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Officials say the four survivors were being treated at a hospital for smoke inhalation and cuts.

Heavy smoke and flames were coming from the house when firefighters arrived on the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The girl’s name was not immediately released.
