METAIRIE, La. (AP) - A 5-year-old girl has drowned in the pool of a vacant home in Metairie.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s spokesman Col. John Fortunato tells NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune that (https://bit.ly/1TEE0Jv ) Renee Thompson was pronounced dead after she was taken to a local hospital Wednesday.

The accident happened about 6 p.m. Wednesday at a home where a gate to the backyard had been broken for about two weeks.

Authorities say the child and her 7-year-old sister had been playing in the backyard of a neighboring home when the older girl noticed her sister was missing. Fortunato says the little girl looked over the fence and saw her sister floating in the pool.

The 7-year-old got their mother, who pulled her daughter out of the water. Paramedics transported her to a local hospital, but she could not be revived.
