MIDDLE RIVER, Md. (AP) - Baltimore County police say a Maryland Transportation Authority Police officer and former police union president is charged with theft.

County police announced Thursday in a statement that 36-year-old Cpl. Shane Schapiro was charged with theft from $10,000 to under $100,000. Police say the charges stem from an investigation into missing and misappropriated funds from Middle River-based FOP Lodge 34, which represents authority police officers.

Cpl. John Wachter says there were discrepancies while Schapiro was president and the union brought the matter to county police and prosecutors.

Wachter says Schapiro surrendered Wednesday and was released on $10,000 bail.

Authority police spokesman 1st Sgt. Jonathan Green says Schapiro has been suspended without pay.

A phone number for Schapiro is disconnected. Attorney Mike Davey says the FOP won’t comment.
