NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - A Newport News shipbuilding company is bringing back hundreds of workers it laid off.

Local news outlets report that Newport News Shipbuilding announced Wednesday that it’s recalling 210 employees after the company let them go in February.

Company president Matt Mulherin says the recalls are a result of “updated workload manning plans and growth work on several programs.”

The recalled employees include sheet-metal workers, painters and those in waterfront support services.

The company also recalled 75 employees in April. The 285 workers that have been brought back since then are among the 738 that were let go on Feb. 3.

Company officials say the layoffs were due to a drop in the shipyard’s workload.
