LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles County authorities say a man wanted for shooting and wounding a West Covina police officer has been arrested and hospitalized for wounds he suffered in last week’s gunbattle.

Sheriff’s Deputy Trina Schrader says Jose Luis Chavez was taken into custody by SWAT officers early Thursday at a home in La Puente.

Schrader says the 47-year-old could face charges including attempted murder of a police officer.

Investigators said Chavez fired several rounds after Officer Kenny Benitez tried to detain him late Friday in West Covina.

Benitez returned fire but was shot in the chest. The officer was released from a hospital Sunday and is continuing his recovery at home.

Officials haven’t said why Benitez initially stopped Chavez.
