DETROIT (AP) - Police made a key arrest Thursday in the shooting of a 2-year-old Detroit girl who was in critical condition.

The girl, identified by family members as Makanzee Oldham, was shot in the head while in a car with her father Wednesday night. Police said there was a dispute between her father and neighbors.

A 31-year-old man who may have been the shooter was arrested at a motel. Two other people were also arrested.

Makanzee is the latest child to be the victim of gunfire in Detroit. A young girl was fatally shot on Easter, and charges were filed this week against family members in two shootings - one fatal - involving kids who found unsecured guns.

“When I got the phone call, I kind of got choked up,” Assistant Police Chief Steve Dolunt said. “This one hurt, a lot. The young girl wasn’t even 3. This one hits hard. When an innocent child gets shot over stupid stuff … it’s just senseless.”

St. John Hospital spokesman Brian Taylor said the girl was in critical condition. Police earlier said she had died.

“She’s still hanging on, but it’s pretty critical,” said a relative, Michael Oldham. “The family is trying to hold it together.”
