TACOMA, Wash. (AP) - Authorities say a 3-year-old boy killed in a Tacoma fire died of smoke inhalation.

The Pierce County Medical Examiner says Nehemiah Bonds was the child killed in the Wednesday duplex fire that also injured the boy’s mother, Shanika Bonds.

The News Tribune reports (https://goo.gl/m1DS3y ) she was treated at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for burns and smoke inhalation and has been released.

Witnesses reported the fire which overtook the home Wednesday afternoon. People tried to get inside to the boy but smoke and heat prevented it. Firefighters later found the boy’s body.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Firefighters said seven people were displaced from three damaged units.

The family of the boy says they plan to hold a candlelight vigil for him Saturday night at the house.
