ANDOVER, Mass. (AP) - An Andover lawyer is headed to prison for his role in a tax refund check-cashing scheme.

The Eagle-Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/1TGYJMY ) that 64-year-old R. David Cohen was sentenced in federal court Wednesday to 4 ½ years in prison. He was convicted in January of charges including conspiracy to convert government funds.

Authorities say he engaged in a scheme in which individuals filed fraudulent tax returns with fake W-2 information.

Once the returns were accepted by the Internal Revenue Service, refund checks were sent to designated addresses controlled by Cohen’s co-conspirators.

Authorities say they deposited more than 100 fraudulently-obtained tax refund checks totaling over $1 million into banks to launder them through Cohen’s trust accounts.

Cohen’s lawyer says more than 92 letters were written in support of Cohen.
