FORSYTH TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Firefighters from airports across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula gathered for aircraft rescue and fire training at Sawyer International Airport.

The Mining Journal of Marquette reports (https://bit.ly/1ORMg1C0 ) crews from Sawyer, Houghton County Memorial Airport, Delta County Airport, Ford Airport, Gogebic Iron County Airport and the Forsyth Township Volunteer Fire Department were on hand for training this week.

The training required by the Federal Aviation Administration is held each year at a different location. Sawyer fire Chief Joe Perry says: “It’s hands-on practice, since we don’t get to do this very often on the job.” Crews took turns Thursday responding to controlled fires.

Sawyer International Airport is located in Marquette County’s Forsyth Township, about 15 miles south of Marquette.
