VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) - Vicksburg Mayor George Flaggs Jr. says he’s running for a second term in 2017.

The Vicksburg Post reports (https://bit.ly/1WQvJmi ) that Flaggs says he’s announcing early because he was “hearing footsteps” from potential challengers. The 63-year-old Democrat says he fasted and prayed before making his decision.

Flaggs served 25 years in the Mississippi House before stepping down in July 2012.

In the 2013 mayoral race, he won a six-person Democratic primary before defeating an independent candidate in the general election.
