CLARKSVILLE, Ark. (AP) - Jurors have convicted a man in the death of a Johnson County sheriff’s deputy.

Fred Kauffeld was convicted Friday of first-degree murder, second-degree murder and residential burglary in the May 2015 shooting death of Auxiliary Deputy Sonny Smith. The jury acquitted Kauffeld of two counts of attempted capital murder.

Authorities say Kauffeld shot Smith while Smith and another deputy were investigating a burglary call.

Kauffeld had testified that he shot Smith in self-defense. But in closing arguments, prosecutor David Gibbons told jurors that Kauffeld fired first on the deputy.

Prosecutors also showed jurors a note that Kauffeld wrote on his jail cell wall after his arrest that said: “I shot the sheriff. I killed the deputy.”
