BALTIMORE (AP) - Just as the Memorial Day weekend began, Maryland officials closed a Baltimore County drawbridge to vehicular traffic for emergency repairs.

The State Highway Administration said in a news release Friday that it has closed the MD 157 drawbridge over Bear Creek in Sparrows Point. The agency says the drawbridge is in the open position, so marine traffic is not affected.

The SHA says it conducted underwater inspections last week and found deterioration of some of the bridge supports. The agency says there was significant corrosion in the steel beams since the last inspection in 2012.

Officials say repairs will begin next week. The SHA says there is no estimated timetable for the repairs.
