ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A 58-year-old former caregiver has been sentenced to six years of probation and will register as a sex offender following his guilty plea for sexually abusing a disabled woman in western New York.

The New York Justice Center says George R. West, of Williamsville, was fired from his job as direct care staff at People Inc. of Amherst. He also surrendered his teaching license.

Justice Christopher Burns sentenced West. Before sentencing, the woman’s guardian said the woman suffered physical and emotional abuse by West and he should go to jail. But she said the plea deal keeps her from having to relive what happened by testifying.

People Inc. is certified by the Office for People With Developmental Disabilities.
