TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - Authorities identified two New Jersey jail officers - who are engaged to be married to each other - charged in the beating of an inmate.

Mercer County prosecutors say Isaac Wood III punched inmate Rafael Jardines in the face at the Mercer County Correction Center this month, then kicked Jardines in the head and body. Jardines was taken to a hospital.

Prosecutors say Trachell Syphax saw the attack and did not stop it, and that both filed false reports about the incident.

A preliminary investigation determined the attack was unprovoked.

Wood, of Ewing, is charged with official misconduct and aggravated assault. Syphax, of Trenton, is charged with official misconduct.

Both were suspended without pay.

A phone number listed for Wood was not working. Syphax didn’t immediately return a phone message.
