OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Oklahoma City police have released the name of a man who was shot and killed by a police officer earlier this week.

Police said Friday that 43-year-old Derek Allan Prophet pulled a knife on Sgt. Steve Helmer, who was on bicycle patrol west of downtown Tuesday.

Capt. Paco Balderrama says Prophet refused to obey instructions given by Helmer and instead went into the middle of the street, pulled a knife and threatened Helmer. The officer then shot Prophet.

The reason Helmer approached Prophet has not been released.

Helmer is on paid leave pending an investigation into the shooting.
