AMHERST, Va. (AP) - Authorities are investigating after they say an inmate was found dead in a courthouse holding cell.

The Virginia State Police said in a statement that 23-year-old Aaron M. Steele of Campbell County was found dead Thursday morning in a holding cell at the Amherst County courthouse.

Police spokeswoman Corrine Geller says Steele had been taken to the courthouse, where he was awaiting his hearing in the cell.

Officials say a deputy spoke to Steele at one point. When the deputy checked again, Steele was dead.

His body has been taken to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy.

Geller says at this time, his death does not appear to be suspicious.
