PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Rhode Island Senate has unanimously approved a new chief judge of the state’s Family Court.

The Providence Journal (https://bit.ly/1X0a0ZS ) reports that Judge Michael Forte was approved Thursday as the senior Family Court judge.

He replaces Haiganush Bedrosian. He has been on the bench since 1987 and has been serving as acting chief since Jan. 1.

The Senate also voted unanimously for family bench judgeships for Family Court Magistrate Rossie Lee Harris Jr. and lawyer Lia Stuhlsatz.

Senate staff confirmed that Harris is the first black judge to serve on that bench in Rhode Island.

The three were among eight judgeship nominations from Gov. Gina Raimondo. Her other selections will be considered by the Senate next week.
