CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A yacht race of more than 1,000 miles is starting this weekend in Charleston.

Nine teams representing six countries are participating in the Atlantic Cup race which leaves from the Charleston City Marina on Saturday.

The yachts will sail north and stop in Brooklyn, New York, from May 31 through June 4.

The race will then resume with the finish line in Portland, Maine, where the yachts should arrive June 10 and 11.

The race is held every two years and this year’s course covers 1,048 nautical miles.
