SUNSET BEACH, N.C. (AP) - Authorities say a father and his 10-year-old son from Georgia have been killed after their personal watercraft suddenly accelerated and crashed into a fishing pier along the North Carolina coast.

State Wildlife Resource Commission Sgt. Brandon Dean told media outlets the boy’s mother and sister were on another personal watercraft and saw the crash Friday.

Dean says 51-year-old John Wernowsky and his son Jake were reaching toward a dock along the Intracoastal Waterway in Sunset Beach when the watercraft suddenly accelerated and went about 100 feet before crashing into the pier so hard that a pylon supporting the structure was broken.

Authorities say the father and son from Acworth, Georgia, died at the scene.

Police, wildlife investigators and the Coast Guard are investigating the crash.
