PHOENIX (AP) - Police are investigating a series of mysterious pet deaths in an area of west Phoenix.

Police spokesman James Holmes says officers were called to a home Thursday afternoon near 85th Avenue and Indian School Road about injured pets.

Holmes says the homeowner, who just returned from work and owns 12 dogs, found eight dead and the other four ill.

Investigators say there were no outward signs of trauma but an examination is planned.

A detective has since learned other pets less than a mile south of that home have died or fallen ill from an unknown source between May 5 and May 22.

Holmes says one pet showed signs of being injured by an icepick-type object.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact them.
