PORT ANGELES, Wash. (AP) - The Clallam County Sheriff says a man is in critical condition after he was shot multiple times by Port Angeles police officers and a sheriff’s deputy.

The sheriff’s office said in a statement Saturday that 36-year-old James Sweet refused commands to drop his weapon and fired at police after a pursuit on U.S. Highway 101 near Port Angeles.

The office says it started Saturday morning when a Port Angeles officer tried to stop the suspect for a vehicle infraction. Sweet drove away, heading eastbound on Highway 101 before crashing into a pickup truck. He got out of his car and fired at the pursuing officer, who fired back.

Two Port Angeles officers and a sheriff’s deputy arrived at the scene. Police say Sweet fired again at police, and all four officers returned fire.

Sweet was taken to a hospital in Port Angeles, and is expected to survive his injuries.

The Washington State Patrol and others are investigating.
