FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) - Former Fairbanks North Star Borough Mayor Luke Hopkins is running for state senate.

The Fairbanks Daily News Miner reports (https://bit.ly/1TGLsi5 ) that Hopkins officially entered the race on Friday after filing a letter of intent to begin fundraising and resigning from his position on the Alaska Gasline Development Corporation’s board.

Democrat Hopkins will face Sen. John Coghill, R-North Pole, in the race for Senate District B, which covers the northern area of the Fairbanks Borough reaching from Ester and Goldstream Valley to North Pole.

Hopkins served multiple terms on the Borough Assembly and was twice elected Borough Mayor. He reached his term limit last fall.
