HEBER, Utah (AP) - Police say an hourslong standoff with a sexual assault suspect has ended after they found the man dead inside a Heber City home from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Deseret News reports (https://bit.ly/20QMhJj ) that Officer Xela Thomas says police responded to the home early Monday to a report that a teenage girl had been drugged and sexually assaulted.

The suspect, 47-year-old James Leo Veyette, is accused of holding two people inside the home at gunpoint. Police had helped an adult woman, two teens and a five-year-old as they exited the residence.

Veyette had refused to come out and a SWAT team was called to the scene. After hours of failed negotiation attempts, SWAT members went inside and found Veyette dead with a gunshot wound.

The incident remains under investigation.
