GEDDES, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a 33-year-old woman is in critical condition after the vehicle she was riding in was hit by a tree that fell onto a Syracuse-area road.

State police say 38-year-old Joshua Lance of Syracuse was driving a sport utility vehicle on John Glenn Boulevard in the town of Geddes around 6 p.m. Sunday when a large tree toppled over and landed on the SUV.

Lance and his passenger, Danielle Menzies of nearby Baldwinsville, had to be extricated from the vehicle.

Troopers say both were taken Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, where Lance was treated and released.

Police say Menzies suffered severe injuries to her neck and back and is listed in critical condition.

The road was closed for several hours while Onondaga County highway crews removed the tree.
