ALTAMONT, Ill. (AP) - A small town Illinois high school marching band has been chosen to represent the state during next year’s Memorial Day parade in Washington D.C.

The Effingham Daily News reports (https://bit.ly/1sneSed ) that Altamont high School’s band will participate in the May 29, 2017, parade. Band director Sara Berg nominated her band this spring. She says the band went through the Illinois Association of School Administrators, then the Illinois State Board of Education and then the governor’s office to earn the spot.

Berg says she’s proud a small school was chosen to represent Illinois.

Trumpet player Elizabeth McCammon says the trip will be “a great opportunity for us” and “a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Altamont is about 90 miles northeast of St. Louis in Effingham County. It has about 2,300 residents.
