SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Police say a man was stabbed in the back at a Utah elementary school playground after attempting to intervene in a couple’s argument.

Unified Police are searching for a suspect who they say had been playing basketball with the victim at West Kearns Elementary School Monday morning. KSL reports that the suspect is in his late 20s or early 30s.

Officials have found the large knife used in the stabbing.

Police say the 36-year-old victim is in serious condition after being stabbed with the knife. He has undergone surgery, and is expected to survive.

Officials did not immediately release the name of the man who was stabbed.

Classes at the elementary school were not held on Monday because of the Memorial Day holiday.
