SHAFTSBURY, Vt. (AP) - Authorities say a New York man riding a motorcycle in Vermont lost control of the bike and died after crashing into a tree.

The Vermont State Police responded to a report of a motorcycle crash in the town of Shaftsbury on Monday afternoon. They pronounced 36-year-old Cambridge resident Philip L. Couch III dead at the scene.

Authorities say it appears Couch was driving east when he lost control of the motorcycle he was riding and went off the edge of the road, striking a tree. The motorcycle was totaled.

The weather at the time was clear and sunny, and the road conditions were dry.

The crash remains under investigation.
