MIDDLEBURG, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say two suspects were hospitalized after shootings during separate traffic stops.

In an emailed statement, Clay County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Mary Justino said a shooting occurred during a traffic stop that Lt. Shawn Gordon initiated late Sunday in Middleburg.

Justino says “something occurred during the encounter” and Gordon fired at the adult male driver.

State law enforcement officials will investigate. Justino says Gordon, a patrol supervisor, was placed on administrative leave.

In South Florida, Miami Gardens Police Chief Antonio Brooklen says a suspect pulled out a gun during an early Sunday traffic stop.

Brooklen tells The Miami Herald (https://hrld.us/1UmkjmV ) the suspect exchanged gunfire with an officer and then led him on a brief chase.

The Herald reports that it’s fourth shooting involving law enforcement officers in Miami-Dade since Wednesday.
