CHATHAM, Va. (AP) - Virginia State Police say a woman is dead after crashing her car into a tree in Pittsylvania County.

State Police say a trooper was called to the scene of the crash around 7:30 a.m. Monday. State Police say the driver of a Ford Focus was traveling east on Route 57 east of Route 640 when she ran off the left side of the roadway and struck a tree.

State Police identified the driver of the car as 26-year-old Nicole Elizabeth Pope of Vernon Hill. State Police say she was wearing her seatbelt and died at the scene. State Police say the crash is under investigation.
