BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Louisiana State Police say there were twice as many Memorial Day weekend traffic deaths in the state this year as there were in 2015.

A Tuesday news release says there were nine fatal crashes resulting in 14 deaths statewide during the holiday weekend. Last year, seven Memorial Day weekend crashes left seven dead.

Troopers said failure to wear seatbelts and suspected drunk driving were factors in several of the deaths.

The dead included a bicyclist who was traveling in the dark and wearing all black clothing when he was hit by a vehicle early Sunday morning; three people killed in a head-on collision in Terrebonne Parish Friday night and an infant who was among three more killed in a Monday night accident in East Feliciana Parish.
