LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson has hired the Arkansas lottery’s security director to head the state’s emergency management office.

Hutchinson on Tuesday announced that A.J. Gary will replace David Maxwell as the new director of the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management. Maxwell is set to retire at the end of the month and Gary will begin July 1.

Gary has been the director of security and compliance for the Arkansas since 2015. Before that, he had served as Conway’s police chief and as chief security administrator for Air Transport International LLC.

Hutchinson says in a news release that Gary’s background and experience make him an “excellent fit” for the job. Hutchinson’s office says Gary’s salary will be the same as Maxwell, who was paid $98,327 a year.
