PROVO, Utah (AP) - Authorities say a 12-year-old boy has been hospitalized in Utah after a football-sized rock fell on his head in Provo Canyon.

Search and rescue teams carried the boy down from a cliff fell near Bridal Veil Falls after he was injured Monday evening. Utah County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Spencer Cannon says the boy had a 3- to 4-inch gash on his head and pain in his arm but was conscious and alert.

Investigators say they think the rock fell about 5 feet before hitting the boy. He was taken to Provo’s Utah Valley Hospital in fair condition.
