PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Police are investigating the death of a man who plunged from an overpass onto an interstate in Philadelphia.

Police said the man, who was believed to be in his 40s, fell onto the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 in south Philadelphia just after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.

He was pronounced dead at the scene minutes later and his body remained in the right traffic lane under a sheet for more than an hour.

Southbound traffic near the overpass was briefly shut down but several lanes were later opened to allow vehicles to get by the scene.

WCAU-TV reported that traffic could be seen backed all the way to the Betsy Ross Bridge about six miles away.
