PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix police say a man is dead after his car crashed into an apartment building after driving away at high speed when officers tried to pull him over for driving with one only headlight.

Police say officers decided against chasing the car which they last saw traveling at very high speed and running red lights early Tuesday morning.

The dead man’s identity wasn’t released.

The crash occurred at an apartment building near 38th Avenue and McDowell Road.

The car hit a hydrant, drove through a fence and struck the building. One man sleeping in his bedroom at the time of the crash had minor scrapes and bruises.

The Fire Department says at least eight people were displaced from the apartment building.
