VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - Authorities say the owner of a sick dog found dumped in a ditch inside a wire crate in Virginia Beach has been charged.

Virginia Beach Animal Control spokeswoman Meghan Conti tells news outlets that 37-year-old Corey Alexander Ridley is charged with animal cruelty and abandonment of an animal.

Officials say they found Ridley’s female beagle May 14 in the ditch. The dog, which had a large tumor, had surgery to remove the growth last week.

Conti says the dog is doing well and still recovering from the surgery.

She says an investigation and several tips led to authorities identifying Ridley as the animal’s owner.

Ridley is scheduled to appear in court July 11. It’s unclear whether he has an attorney to comment on the charges.
