SANDUSKY, Ohio (AP) - Police in northern Ohio say they believe a 7-year-old boy who was shot in the face accidentally wounded himself while playing with a gun at a home.

The Sandusky Register (https://bit.ly/1TRvFAz ) reports a man called 911 on Sunday afternoon and said his nephew shot himself while playing with a firearm. The boy suffered a gunshot wound to the cheek and was rushed to a local hospital, then quickly taken by helicopter to a hospital in Cleveland.

Sandusky police Chief John Orzech said the boy was being treated in an intensive care unit. Police didn’t provide further details about his condition.

Detective Ken Nixon says the 911 caller and another man were at the home when the shooting occurred but didn’t see what happened.

It’s not clear who owns the gun.
