CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a New York man who went for a swim and disappeared while on a fishing trip is presumed dead.

Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino says Tuesday afternoon that a search for 47-year-old Alex Desouza, of Brooklyn, is now a “recovery mission.”

Desouza vanished under the water about 150 yards from the shore off Croton (KROH’-tuhn) Point Park around 10:45 a.m. Tuesday.

Police and fire agencies had deployed divers, sonar, a helicopter and other means to scour the area. They say they will resume searching for Desouza Wednesday morning.

Westchester County police spokesman Kieran O’Leary says Desouza and two friends rented a cabin at the park Monday night and were fishing Tuesday when he decided to take a dip.

He says the area is known for difficult currents, and swimming there isn’t recommended.

This story has been corrected to show the victim’s name is Desouza and not DeSouza.
