MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (AP) - Connecticut State Police investigated nearly 450 accidents and arrested 51 people for allegedly driving while intoxicated over a five-day period that included the Memorial Day weekend.

The department announced Tuesday that of the 447 accidents investigated from 12:01 a.m. Thursday to 11:59 p.m. Monday, two were fatal and 74 involved injuries.

Troopers also handed out nearly 6,300 tickets and citations, including 1,263 for speeding and 903 for seat belt violations.

Over the same period last year, troopers investigated far fewer accidents, just 285, but made 57 arrests for driving while intoxicated, slightly more than this year.
