BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) - A pilot escaped injury when his small airplane crashed while trying to land at the Laurel Airport.

The pilot told Yellowstone County sheriff’s officials that he’d flown out to Columbus and was returning at about 11:30 a.m. Monday when a gust of wind hit the plane as he tried to land in Laurel. The plane crashed off the end of the runway.

Sgt. Kevin Cunningham says the Piper PA-18 Super Cub was extensively damaged. The pilot’s name was not released.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
